With the coronavirus outbreak continuing to trouble people worldwide, some started to search everywhere for explanations and answers. One odd conspiracy theory involves the outer space.
How such a belief appeared emerged?
Chandra Wickramasinghe, praised for his research in astrobiology and astronomy, spread the wild speculation that coronavirus came from outer space. He thinks the virus was living on a space object, such a comet, and a part of that rock might have reached our planet.
The event, Wickramasinghe believes, fell in China back in October 2019. He also indicated that comets transporting viruses might have caused other outbreaks, too.
Wickramasinghe had previously suggested that another related illness, known as SARS, also came from outer space. Back in the 1970s, he co-wrote a book called “Diseases from Space,” and for many years, he has attempted to demonstrate that viruses like SARS or flu have a space origin.
Scientists, however, have rebuked his theories. Also, his ideas have been recognized as “bad science” or pseudoscience.
Science debunked the coronavirus conspiracy theory about its origins
Only in some rare cases a virus can survive the cosmic radiations. Astrobiologist Graham Lau, known for his work at NASA’s “Ask an Astrobiologist” series, stated: “It’s one of those cases where extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”
Moreover, from the information released until now about the new coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, it is clear that the virus is similar to other terrestrial viruses. However, the virus brought the COVID-19 disease, which has infected more than 190,000 people worldwide, according to a New York Times report.
Theoretically, biological particles could survive on a space rock. They could lie dormant and continue to exist if the particles are entirely covered from the radiation in space. They would also need to survive the process of reaching Earth, according to Lau.
Scientists have discovered before some organic molecules such as amino acids inside meteorites. However, there is no possible proof to showcase that the novel coronavirus originated from outer space.
