Google Removes another Dangerous App from its Play Store

The Google Play Store hosts numerous apps that had been improving the lives of many of us. Whether we’re talking about browsers, mail apps, navigation apps, educational apps, or games (practically they’re also apps), there are tons of helpful software to choose from.

But nothing is perfect in this world, and as in the good tradition of the Play Store, the online marketplace raises awareness once again about a malicious piece of software. The culprit is the Zedge app, and its developers themselves were the ones to first say it. They reported a bug, without bringing further details.

Removed from the Google Play Store

Google cares very much about the safety of its users, and therefore it chose without hesitation to take down the Zedge app from its Play Store. For those who don’t know, Zedge is an app that provides wallpapers and ringtones for the devices where it’s being installed on. Its description from the Play Store says:

“ZEDGE™ gives you the best background wallpapers and cool ringtones for free!

Personalize your phone with a HD wallpaper, live wallpaper, alarm sound or ringtone with ease. ZEDGE™ offers an extensive catalog with millions of free backgrounds, live wallpapers, stickers, ringtones, alarm sounds & notification sounds for your Android phone. Search for Anything – It’s on ZEDGE™

Those who wanted to personalize their device found a good source of wallpapers and ringtones on the Zedge app. But from now on, they will have to shift their focus elsewhere. While there’s no info about what kind of bug there was, we can bet that it jeopardized the security of users since the app was taken down by Google.

The good news is that the developers of the Zedge app also said that they will fix the issue very soon. Zedge is also available for iOS and Windows phones.
