NASA Plans To Develop a Long-Lasting Base on the Moon

NASA discussed its upcoming plans recently. The space agency intends to build up a base on the Moon. It would be able to send astronauts to Mars from the Moon’s surface as part of the Artemis program. Establishing an extended lunar presence would also allow a more efficient exploration of distant areas of the solar system. More Moon discoveries would also be possible.

The lunar base would comprise elements such as a vehicle for transporting astronauts around the Moon’s ground. Something like a mobile habitation to let astronauts fly across the Moon for approximately 45 days at a time. A more permanent lunar staying would also be possible where up to four astronauts could develop their tasks for short periods.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA’s Administrator, stated: “For years to come, Artemis will serve as our North Star as we continue to work toward even greater exploration of the Moon, where will demonstrate key elements for the first human mission to Mars.”

NASA’s plans include a three-domain strategy for extended exploration. The goal is to start by supporting the commercialization of low-Earth orbit. Also, to help the private companies to develop their research into space. First, the space agency will use robots to explore the Moon, such as the VIPER rover.

Then, it will send astronauts on the Moon, followed by long-term human operations on the lunar ground. Such a thing will establish a staging environment from which the Red Planet could be explored. Finally, the third part includes robotic missions to Mars. They will prepare the groundwork for human exploration.

NASA stated: “Artemis and the development of Artemis Base Camp will inspire the world with the ability and commitment of American leadership, and in the positive potential of humanity as a whole.”
