We already know that Shrek 5 is in works, and it has been for a very long time. We also know that it will be a very different story, so people are calling it a reboot. NBCUniversal bought Dreamworks studios, and that’s when they choose what projects they will work on. They wanted Puss in the Boots and Shrek.
Shrek is very popular – perhaps the most popular series out there, with several movies in the series, spin-offs, and even theme parks. Shrek 5 is one of the most anticipated films to meet the light of the day at NBCUniversal. Rumor has it, and they hired new stuff for the original story. The pre-production has already started, so we will soon get a release date.
Back in 2016, it was confirmed that Chris Meledandri was hired to handle the production. Also, Michael McCullers was hired as the new writer, and he will give a new storyline to the movie. The script was reinvented entirely, and we will see our beloved characters from a unique point of view, a more modern one.
The pre-production has already started, given the fact that the script was changed, and it is now ready. NBCUniversal is prepared to begin working on the movie – as soon as the situation with COVID-19 gets under control. It might take about two years for the film to be done, and then actors will need to record their lines.
So when is the release date?
The release date for this movie might be in September 2022, if we are to take into account the slots booked by them for an untitled Dreamworks animated movie. But given the situation around the world with COVID-19, the movie might be delayed until 2023.
