Ever since the pandemic began, we have all been wondering where the virus came from. We are sure that it comes from bats; however, according to a new study, there’s more to the theory than we initially thought.
There are many theories out there, mostly because of the lack of clarity that revolves around how the virus was passed to humans. Many people believe that the virus escaped from a laboratory in China.
But the most popular explanation, based on what we know so far about the virus, is that that the bats passed it to another animal, which then spread it to people.
The World Health Assembly and the World Health Organization’s decision-making body, passed a resolution back in May, which calls on the agency to work with international organizations in order to identify the animal source.
However, scientists stated that the evidence that we have so far suggests that it’s going to be hard to find the animal source and very challenging to completely rule out the Wuhan Institute of Virology as being the source.
This institute of virology is located in the city where the outbreak first happened, but that might just be a coincidence. However, the work that its researchers are doing is to find the origin of the pandemic and to rule out its role in the outbreak. Several of the authors of the latest bat study actually work there.
There’s also an independent investigation that takes place at the facility, which might be the only way to rule out the lab as the source of the outbreak. However, this probed might be unlikely to happen due to the geopolitics which surround this issue.
